Y2K Upgrade for DollarLink

The Y2K-compatible upgrade of DollarLink for Signal and BMI is now available. The upgrade resolves potential problems that may appear when DollarLink has to use dates -- either in calculations or display -- that involve the year greater than 1999.

You can either download the upgrade from our website or get it by mail. There is no cost if you download the upgrade from the website. If we have to mail it to you, then the handling cost is $50.

To request the upgrade either e-mail or call us at 415-641-0721.

The upgrade itself is free to all the users who purchased DollarLink. However, as it has always been our policy, technical support -- including questions about downloading and installation of the upgrade -- is available only for active customers.

Active customers are defined as current renters, all purchasers within the last 12 months, or purchasers who have paid the $300 support fee within the last 12 months. Contact us if you wish to check or change your status.

It is a good idea to backup all your DollarLink files -- especially the historical price data files -- before you install the upgrade. Also, during the upgrade procedure DollarLink will ask you whether you want it to back up your current files. By all means say yes to that question.

The operation of DollarLink has not changed and it should continue to work the same way after the upgrade. You will have to run our SETUP utility to customize DollarLink the way you want it. Again, before doing the upgrade, write down the various settings in DollarLink that you currently are using, i.e., your various passwords, serial port settings, number of graph pages, FM channels, baud rates, graphics adapter type, etc.

Due to the big run-up in prices of various market indices, we have modified the files REDUCE and ACCURATE to be able to properly report correct prices. Our December 1998 newsletter discusses the details of REDUCE and ACCURATE. When you start DollarLink for the first time after the upgrade you may get some strange -- too high or too low -- prices for some indices. To correct, delete the symbol from the portfolio and re-insert it back.

Those of you who have not upgraded in several years should bring yourselves up to date by referring to the newsletters at our website.

Also for those of you who have not upgraded in several years, DollarLink requires about 575K of conventional RAM to run properly. Conventional RAM is the first 640K of RAM in a DOS machine. You may have a lot of RAM installed in your PC but DOS applications, including DollarLink, only use the lowest 640K. You can find out how much free conventional RAM your PC has by executing from the DOS prompt the command MEM [enter]. The utility MEM (which comes with DOS) will give you a memory usage report. The largest executable program size available should be about 575K or more.

DOS comes with a utility called MEMMAKER which when executed will move out the various memory-resident DOS programs from conventional to high thereby freeing up the conventional memory for applications.
